About Raas
What is Raas?
Raas is a very energetic and lively Indian folk dance from the state of Gujarat. Dancers traditionally line up in either circles or lines, and rhythmically hit their dandias (wooden sticks) with their partners’ dandias. Because raas is readily embraced by people of all ages and backgrounds, this highly entertaining dance form has become a sensation across the United States. Many colleges have founded raas teams that compete in national intercollegiate competitions. These competitions and raas teams promote awareness of Indian culture by blending traditional songs and music with contemporary styles, stunts, and formations.
Mission & Community
The University of Chicago Raas Team welcomes all students and staff to join us in spreading a love for raas dance, cultural awareness, and involvement in the community! We welcome dancers from all backgrounds and embrace diversity in all forms.
The University of Chicago Raas Team won the Outstanding New Recognized Student Organization Award in 2009 for exceeding expectations in contributing to student life and the campus community.
Charity
Chicago Raas is a proud supporter of Manav Sadhana and Keep A Child Alive.
Manav Sadhna is a humanitarian organization which works to educate, empower, and rebuild the lives of underprivileged children in India.
Keep A Child Alive is a non-profit organization founded in 2002 by Leigh Blake and Alicia Keys helping families impacted by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. This charity provides support for orphans whose parents lost the battle to HIV/AIDS and health care treatment to those currently in the fight against HIV/AIDS. With 24.7 million people now living with HIV/AIDS in Africa and India, Keep A Child Alive is actively striving to save the lives of children that have been affected by the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in their native lands and have lost essential family members. Unlike many charities, 100% of donations made to Keep A Child Alive go to helping them achieve their mission.
